Derby consultant wins Parkinson’s award for his pioneering work

Published 11/04/2013

One of the country’s leading experts in Parkinson’s disease has been named the top consultant in the Decade of Difference awards from the Parkinson’s Academy.

Dr Rob Skelly and his team at Derby Hospitals have spent the past decade developing some of the best services in the country for the care and treatment of patients with Parkinson’s.

The city’s team of consultants, doctors, nurses and therapists has previously been recognised for its outstanding work. The Derby Specialist Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre is one of only two in the UK to be named a National Parkinson Foundation Centre of Excellence.

Now Dr Skelly has won the consultant’s award in the Parkinson’s Academy Decade of Difference Awards “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award as it recognises that the team I work alongside here in Derby is providing a very good service to our patients with Parkinson’s. It is very much a team effort and this award is for the whole team.”

The awards recognise individuals who are at the forefront of providing innovative education and best practice in the care of Parkinson’s.

Dr Skelly was nominated by members of his own team who say his work deserves national recognition “We are very pleased that Dr Skelly’s pioneering work here in Derby has won this prestigious national award. He is fully committed to ensuring that patients receive the best possible care. He has put in place many innovations and it is really encouraging to know that the work he has done here in Derby will now be shared nationwide so all Parkinson’s patients might benefit in the longer term” says Fiona Lindop, Parkinson’s specialist physiotherapist who works with Dr Skelly at the London Road Specialist Assessment & Rehabilitation Centre in Derby.
