Derby Hospitals nominated for travel award

Published 16/10/2014

Derby Hospitals has been shortlisted for an award recognising environmentally friendly workplaces.

The Trust has been nominated for this year’s Public Sector Sustainability Awards, which highlight those organisations which promote green technologies and methods of working.

The Trust’s travel plan was selected among the contenders for the Most Sustainable Public Sector Project category.

A staff travel survey carried out in 2014 showed the Trust has reduced numbers of single-occupancy vehicles by 6% and seen increases in staff walking, cycling and using public transport.

It is not the first time Derby Hospitals has been recognised for its efforts to promote sustainability. Earlier this year, the Trust was honoured in the first annual Connected Business Awards, organised by Connected – Derby’s brand for promoting sustainable transport in the city – winning the Connected Large Employment Site of the Year award.

It was also highly commended in the Travel Initiative of the Year category – for offering employees who walk or cycle 12 free entries into the staff car park each year – and highly commended Travel Champion of the Year.

The Public Sector Sustainability award winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 19.

Paul Brooks, director of facilities for Derby Hospitals, said: “This is a great achievement for us. We are committed to making sure we reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable transport and we have worked hard to encourage this across our staff and in our visitors.”
