Derby Hospitals’ IT innovations earn two award nods

Published 30/06/2014

Derby Hospitals is in the running to win two national awards for its innovative use of IT in healthcare.

The Trust has been shortlisted in two categories at this year’s HSJ Value in Healthcare awards.

The honours are given out to those Trusts which can demonstrate outstanding efficiency and improvement, with excellent use of resources.

Derby Hospitals has been nominated in both the Value and Improvement in Telehealth, and Value and Improvement in Information Technology categories.

For telehealth, the Trust submitted an entry detailing its use of Skype technology on the renal ward. Skype allows users to communicate by voice, video and text over the internet and the service is used at the Royal Derby Hospital so that patients can have a communication link with staff at the hospital from the comfort of their home, giving blood pressure and heart rate readings and talking through any issues on a one-to-one basis.

And in information technology, Derby Hospitals has been given the nod for the development of its GP App, a software package which offers information on urgent and clinical hospital services available at the touch of a button, round the clock, in any location, on smart-phones, tablets or desktop-PCs.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony, to be held in London, in September.
