Published 27/06/2014

Two of Derby Hospitals’ staff are to run through nine countries in 24 hours to help people with motor neurone disease.

James Realey, an apprentice in Finance and Bev Baxter, a Clinical Nurse Specialist, both run with the Shelton Striders Running Club, members of which will be running a marathon distance, 5 kilometres in 9 different countries all within 24 hours.

The 24 hours non-stop effort begins in Belgium and continues to Holland, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein , Austria, ending in Italy .

James said: “A quote that has always inspired me is – ‘however slow you go, remember you are lapping everyone on the couch!’ I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”

Bev said: “A marathon spread over 9 European countries in 24 hours should be possible, but it has never been tried before, so anything could happen! “

The pair are making the epic journey on 27 June to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

The two are supporting a year-long campaign involving three men who are planning to run or cycle 2014 miles in 2014 for MNDA. Donations can be made on their page www.justgiving.com/2014in2014
