Derby Hospitals looking for new public governors

Published 16/04/2014

Members of the public are being offered the chance to play key roles in shaping the future of Derby Hospitals.

The Trust is looking for a number of new public governors, with vacancies for residents in Amber Valley, Derby City, Derbyshire Dales and South Derbyshire and Erewash.

Public governors work together with staff governors to ensure that the views of NHS Foundation Trust members, and the wider community, are represented at the top level.

Each role is an opportunity for members of the public to become more involved in the services provided at the Royal Derby Hospital and the London Road Community Hospital.

Nominations forms are available from 22 April and the closing date 8 May 2014.

The council of governors are involved in determining the future plans of the Trust. They can hold the board of directors to account for their actions and select and appoint the Chairman and non-executive directors.

Successful candidates will be expected to attend the council of governors meetings and informal workshops. Governors are able to join a range of hospitals groups to accommodate their interests as well as gaining an insight into the patient experience and the excellence of the hospitals’ services.

Governors can get involved in hospital inspection tours as well as promoting Trust membership through recruitment activities.

To stand for a governor the public must be a member of the Trust but that membership is free.

Assistant director of corporate affairs Justine Fitzjohn said: “To be given the opportunity of representing the wider community’s views and opinions about the hospitals is a very strong way of having direct influence on the direction of local health services. It’s a chance to take a front seat within the Trust and help shape healthcare here in Derby.”

An information pack is available by calling 01332 786896. It is also online in the members’ section of the Trust’s website at www.derbyhospitals.nhs.uk.
