The Council of Governors of Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has approved the appointment of Sir Stephen Moss as a Non-Executive Director on the Trust Board. Sir Stephen has worked for the NHS for over 40 years and brings with him a wealth of experience.

As a registered nurse by profession, he has a strong passion for quality improvement, and in particular the need to ensure that care and treatment are delivered with skill and compassion.

During his career he has worked in a wide range of roles including Chief Nurse at the former DRI, Nurse Director, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. He is a former Commissioner on the Commission for Health Improvement, a post he held for four years and he was previously the Chairman of the Nurse Directors' Association. Most recently he was Chair of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust from August 2009 to January 2012, where he was selected for his strong track record in delivering high quality care, and where he was brought in to improve the quality of patient care and begin to restore public confidence following the highly critical report from the Healthcare Commission.

Sir Stephen will replace Walter Dodd on the Trust Board who will retire at the end of April 2013. Walter, who has been a Non-Executive Director for four and a half years,  has made an extensive contribution to the Trust Board and has been instrumental in developing the role of volunteers to ensure patients and their relatives have a good experience when coming to The Royal Derby and London Road Community hospitals.

Chairman John Rivers said "We are delighted to have appointed Sir Stephen Moss to the Trust Board. He is keen to support our commitment to empowering front line clinical teams to deliver the best possible care for patients. I should also like to take this opportunity to thank Walter Dodd for his commitment and contribution to the Trust Board and wish him a happy retirement."

Sir Stephen Moss commented: "I have very fond memories of my time at the former DRI, and am delighted to be given this further opportunity to contribute to the development of health services in Derbyshire. I hope that I can use my years of experience as a nurse and a leader in the NHS to support the Board and our staff in their efforts to deliver the best quality of care and treatment for local people."
