Consultant Surgeons

Bariatric Surgeon
Mr Awad is Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric & Laparoscopic Surgeon at The East-Midlands Bariatric & Metabolic Institute (EMBMI), Royal Derby Hospital, Derby; and Hon. Assoc. Professor of Surgery at the University of Nottingham. He read medicine at the University of St.Andrews/Manchester and qualified in 2001. 

His surgical training was undertaken in Manchester, the East-Midlands and London. His specialist training included undertaking two advanced keyhole fellowships (Upper Gastrointestinal/Bariatric Surgery) where he gained significant experience in advanced keyhole abdominal surgery. He is a specialist in bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, surgery for oesophageal and stomach cancer, and anti-reflux/hiatus hernia surgery (for heartburn and acid-reflux). He also undertakes other general surgical procedures such as keyhole removal of the gallbladder and hernia repairs.

Mr Awad also completed a PhD into the metabolic effects of preoperative carbohydrate drinks to research how to better prepare patients’ metabolism for surgery. His research was awarded numerous international and national research prizes and medals (including the 2010 Moynihan Medal of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland, the 2012 Research Fellowship of the European Society of Clinical Nutrition & Metabolism, the 2009 Royal College of Surgeons of England Rosetrees Trust Research Prize). 

He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 10 book chapters and delivered over 35 international presentations. He is an expert journal reviewer for numerous international journals. His research interests include: insulin resistance, enhanced recovery after surgery, metabolic conditioning, metabolic surgery, perioperative nutrition, fluid and electrolyte balance, surgical safety and teaching.

Ashock Bohra
Mr Ashock Bohra, MBBS MS MPhil MFSTEd PGDip (Clin.Edu) PGCert (NHS Leadership Fellowship) FRCSEd FRCS Gen.Surg). Mr Bohra has an experience of a vast experience of general surgical procedures with special interests in Upper GI Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery. He trained with some of the renowned Upper GI and Bariatric trainers in the country and then in Belgium. He was appointed a substantive Consultant in the NHS in 2005. As a member of the Quality Standards Advisory Committee at NICE he has been working on the quality guidance for management of obesity in children and young adults. Married and a father of 2 children, he is an avid cricket and football fan. He has multilingual fluency in 5 languages.
Mr Paul Leader

Paul Leeder qualified as a doctor from The University of Sheffield in 1989. He had his specialist surgical training in Nottingham, Leeds, Oxford & Adelaide, Australia. He has had specialist training in Bariatric Surgery in Adelaide, Lyon, Hamburg and Leeds. 

Mr Leeder commenced work at Derby, as a full time NHS Consultant Surgeon in 2002. He helped set up the first regional Bariatric Surgery service for the East Midlands in 2004. He is Assistant Clinical Director for Upper GI & Bariatric Surgery at Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is Course Director for Laparoscopic Surgery courses held in both Derby & The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is a member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and the British Obesity Surgery Patients AssociationHe is a Council Member & Director of Education for The Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He is also a member of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons and the British Society of Gastroenterology.
