Mr Awad is Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric & Laparoscopic Surgeon at The East-Midlands Bariatric & Metabolic Institute (EMBMI), Royal Derby Hospital, Derby; and Hon. Assoc. Professor of Surgery at the University of Nottingham. He read medicine at the University of St.Andrews/Manchester and qualified in 2001.
His surgical training was undertaken in Manchester, the East-Midlands and London. His specialist training included undertaking two advanced keyhole fellowships (Upper Gastrointestinal/Bariatric Surgery) where he gained significant experience in advanced keyhole abdominal surgery. He is a specialist in bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, surgery for oesophageal and stomach cancer, and anti-reflux/hiatus hernia surgery (for heartburn and acid-reflux). He also undertakes other general surgical procedures such as keyhole removal of the gallbladder and hernia repairs.
Mr Awad also completed a PhD into the metabolic effects of preoperative carbohydrate drinks to research how to better prepare patients’ metabolism for surgery. His research was awarded numerous international and national research prizes and medals (including the 2010 Moynihan Medal of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland, the 2012 Research Fellowship of the European Society of Clinical Nutrition & Metabolism, the 2009 Royal College of Surgeons of England Rosetrees Trust Research Prize).
He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 10 book chapters and delivered over 35 international presentations. He is an expert journal reviewer for numerous international journals. His research interests include: insulin resistance, enhanced recovery after surgery, metabolic conditioning, metabolic surgery, perioperative nutrition, fluid and electrolyte balance, surgical safety and teaching.
