Consultant Psychologist

 Chris Gillespie

Dr. Chris  Gillespie is the Consultant Clinical Health Psychologist at The East-Midlands Bariatric & Metabolic Institute (EMBMI), Royal Derby Hospital, Derby.

His clinical training was at the University of Edinburgh supported by a MRC Advanced Studentship. He then completed a PhD at the University of Sheffield entitled  “Psychological Variables in the Self-Regulation of Diabetes”.  He has published controlled studies both in mental and physical health and has contributed to teaching doctoral psychology trainees at the Universities of Leicester, Sheffield and Nottingham. He has been an invited workshop leader at the Harvard Medical School.

 Following his doctoral research on consultation strategies in diabetes care he has facilitated national multidisciplinary workshops for physicians,  GPs, dieticians and specialist nurses for many years.  His main clinical interest is facilitating behavioural change in long term conditions where engagement, motivation, empowerment, self-efficacy and embodied cognition remain as obstacles to optimal outcomes.  For the past five years in the field of Weight Loss Surgery he is involved in the development of pre-surgical screening of  all patients designed to select patients who may need additional psychological support before and/or after surgery.
