Consultants

 

Dr Ruth Aldridge MBChB  MD FRCP

Ruth is a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Derby Hospital.  She is Lead Clinician for the Lung Cancer MDT and is Chair of the East Midlands Mesothelioma group. 

She graduated from Sheffield University in 1989.  She completed a period of post-graduate research in New Zealand 1995-1997, producing an MD thesis in ‘airway inflammation and the interaction between beta-agonists and steroids’.  She returned to the UK in 2000 and completed her post-graduate training in the Manchester.  She has been a Respiratory Consultant in Derby since 2003.

Ruth loves the outdoors – including walking, wild camping and sailing.  She’s the soprano in a local singing quartet ‘Classical Jazz’.  She is a youth leader at her local church.

Dr Paul Beckett MB BChir MD FRCP

Paul is a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Derby Hospital and has a special interest in lung cancer, as well as in Service Improvement/Audit and the use of IT in healthcare.

He graduated from Cambridge University in 1992, did his specialist training in the Wessex Deanery and completed an MD thesis in "Airway Remodelling in Asthma". He was appointed to his first consultant post in 2003 and spent 10 years at Queen's Hospital, Burton-on-Trent before moving to Derby.

As part of his interest in lung cancer, he is one of the clinical leads for the National Lung Cancer Audit and sits on the NCIN lung cancer site-specific clinical reference group. He is a member of the Nottingham Lung Cancer Research Group and has several publications in this area.

In his spare time, Paul will most often be found sitting under his laptop designing websites, but he also enjoys a brisk walk up a mountain followed by a good meal and a few drinks with his family.

Dr Robert Berg MBChB FCP (SA) FRCP

Rob graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1994. After experience in medicine and anaesthetics, he specialised in general and respiratory medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital. He has been a consultant in respiratory medicine in Derby since 2005. He is lead for interstitial lung disease, and has recently started a joint rheumatology/ILD clinic in conjunction with Marian Regan (consultant rheumatologist). He is a member of the Midlands ILD consortium, and is involved in collaborative ILD research with Nottingham. Rob's other interests include thoracoscopy, pneumonia, lung cancer and pulmonary vascular disease. He also  contributes to the respiratory clinic  at Ilkeston Hospital.

Rob is a sports enthusiast, plays cricket for the hospital side, and cycles to work come rain or snow. He enjoys flyfishing and fell walking with his family.

Dr Tom Bewick MA BM BCh DM MRCP

Tom is a Consultant and Research Lead in Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Derby Hospital. His sub-specialty interests include respiratory infection, interventional bronchoscopy and lung cancer.

After graduating from Oxford University in 2003 he completed his general medical and specialty training in the East Midlands. His post-graduate research explored the changing characteristics of adult pneumonia following the introduction of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to infant immunisation schedules, and gained an MD in 2012 from the University of Nottingham.

He was appointed a Consultant at the Royal Derby Hospital in 2013, and contributes to a general respiratory outpatient clinic at Ilkeston Community Hospital.

Tom's ongoing research contribution includes recruiting participants to international clinical trials in COPD, as well as locally initiated projects in collaboration with the Nottingham Respiratory Infections Group.

In his spare time Tom enjoys keeping a productive allotment and entertaining his young children.

Dr William Elston  MBBS, FRCP

Will is a Consultant Respiratory Physician and Clinical Director for Specialist Medicine at the Royal Derby Hospital.

He graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, University of London in 1991 and did post-graduate clinical training in London including Specialist Registrar training in East London before taking up a Consultant post at the DRI in 2005.

His sub-specialty interests include Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, COPD and Interstitial Lung Disease.

As well as his work at the Royal Derby Hospital, Will provides a general respiratory clinic at Long Eaton Health Centre.

Outside of work, Will is a passionate Notts County supporter, a keen runner and golfer and enjoys watching cricket at Trent Bridge.

Dr Gillian Lowrey BA MBBS DM MRCP 

Gill is a Consultant Chest Physician at the Royal Derby Respiratory Unit, with a particular interest in COPD, Pulmonary Rehabilitation and thoracic cancer. She is currently a member of the Specialist Advisory Group on COPD for the British Thoracic Society.

She studied pre-clinical medicine at Oxford University, and completed her undergraduate medical training at the Royal London Hospital Medical School in 1997. Gill undertook post-graduate clinical training in Ipswich, London and the East Midlands. She completed post-graduate research at the University of Nottingham, culminating in a Doctor of Medicine degree for her thesis on the role of Matrix Metalloproteinases in COPD in 2007. She has been a respiratory consultant in Derby since 2009.

Outside work, Gill is a busy mother of two. She enjoys cooking, and a good glass of wine with friends.

Dr George F Mabeza FRCP PhD

George is a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine and leads the Respiratory High Dependency Unit (HDU), Sleep Medicine and Home Non-Invasive Ventilation aspects of the local Respiratory Service. He also has an active sub-speciality interest in Tuberculosis and Bronchiectasis.

He graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in 1991 and undertook postgraduate research (PhD) at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He completed his general and specialty training in the East Midlands and was appointed as a Consultant at the Royal Derby Hospital in November 2004.

Outside work George is actively involved in Christian based Preventative Health Message Work, his young family and is a keen walker.

Dr Deepak Subramanian MBChB, BSc, MRCP, MD

Deepak was recently appointed as a consultant chest physician at the Royal Derby Hospital in May 2013. He trained at Leeds Medical School and undertook his specialist training in respiratory medicine in the West Midlands. He completed his higher research degree at the University of Warwick and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire. He was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree for his thesis on 'The role of quantitative morphological and functional imaging of the lung in COPD studies'.

He has a specialist interest in asthma, and gained experience from working in severe asthma clinics in the West Midlands. He has also been trained at performing endobronchial ultrasounds (EBUS) and has jointly set up this service in Derby. His additional interests include COPD and undertaking clinical research.

In addition to his work at Royal Derby Hospital, Dr Subramanian provides a general respiratory clinic at Ilkeston Community Hospital.

Deepak is a keen sportsman and enjoys playing golf, cricket and football in his spare time.

Dr Irfan Wahedna MBBS, MRCP (UK), FRCP (London)

Irfan is a Consultant Chest Physician at the Royal Derby Respiratory Unit, with a particular interest in asthma, cough, bronchiectasis and tuberculosis.

He graduated from Karachi University in 1983 and did post-graduate clinical training in Hastings, Stockport, Sheffield and London. He completed post-graduate research at the University of Nottingham, examining the effects of leukotriene D4 antagonists and the effects of regular use of short acting β2 agonists in asthma.  

Irfan started his Consultant post in March 1994 at Barnsley Hospital before moving to Derby in November 2002. As well as his work at Royal Derby Hospital, Dr Wahedna provides a general respiratory clinic at Long Eaton Health Centre in Nottingham.

Irfan is a cricket enthusiast, playing for a local club in the South Nottinghamshire league and captaining the Hospital team.

Dr Christopher Whale MBChB DM FRCP

Chris is a Consultant Chest Physician and lead clinician of the Royal Derby Respiratory Unit, with a particular interest in thoracic cancer and pleural disease.

He graduated from Liverpool University in 1996 and did post-graduate clinical training in Manchester, Australia and the East Midlands. He completed post-graduate research as part of the airway pharmacology group at the University of Nottingham, culminating in a Doctor of Medicine degree for his thesis on ‘Safety aspects of β2-agonists in COPD’. Chris subsequently did a fellowship in lung transplantation and pulmonary hypertension at the Western Australia Advanced Lung Disease Unit before starting his Consultant post in May 2009.

As well as his work at Royal Derby Hospital, Dr Whale provides a general respiratory clinic at St Oswald’s in Ashbourne.

Chris is a sports fanatic/anorak and enjoys cycling in the Peak District and playing golf by the seaside.
