Vestibular Physiotherapy

Service Description:

We take referrals from hospital doctors, GPs and physiotherapists for patients who experience dizziness, vertigo and balance problems related to pathologies which affect the inner ear. These may overlap with other conditions which effect balance. Conditions treated include stable Meniere’s Disease, unilateral vestibular hypofunction, bilateral vestibular loss, poorly compensated labarynthitis / vestibular neuronitis, BPPV, Migraine Associated Vertigo, and visual vertigo.

 Location:

We are based at the London Road Community Hospital within the physiotherapy department with an assessment clinic held in ENT at Royal Derby Hospital.

 Therapy involves:

-     Talking with the patients in order to understand what they experience by way of balance problems.

-     Education and reassurance, explaining to them why they experience these problems, pathologies involved and how the rehabilitation process works.

-     Assessment of the vestibular system and general balance as a whole.

-     Teaching and explaining patient specific exercise programmes and advice.

-     We welcome the involvement of relatives and carers.

Rehabilitation represents a long term project usually of between 6 – 18 months, involving 4 daily exercise sessions. Appointments are usually 6-8 weeks apart.
