Occupational Therapy information

An Occupational Therapist may be involved in your discharge planning following orthopaedic surgery, especially with regards to providing any necessary equipment. It is also our role, to work alongside Physiotherapy in assessing transfer methods and making sure you are safe for discharge home.

If you live within Derby City or Derby County, we have an equipment loan provider- Medequip, who will deliver any necessary equipment to your home address, in time for discharge if appropriate. This includes short term loan wheelchairs, commodes, urine bottles, transfer equipment etc. We will be involved in assessing these needs on the ward following your child’s surgery. It is worth noting please, that we do NOT have facilities or resources/stock here at the Children’s hospital, to provide you with wheelchairs, pushchairs/buggies, car seats etc.

If your child has specialised seating needs and requires a higher level of seating with postural support/head support etc, then we will need to liaise with Derbyshire Wheelchair Services. If adaptions are required to current wheelchair/seating, then we need as much notice as possible prior to the surgery date, in order to sort this out. If you have a community Occupational Therapist and/or physiotherapist, please also discuss this with them.

If you are coming for surgery in Derby, but live out of area, in particular Burton and Staffordshire, then we are not able to provide you with equipment from our Derby provider. This causes issues with short term loan wheelchairs, as Staffordshire do NOT have any provision within that area. The only option is for wheelchair hire from Derby Red Cross, and their contact details are:

British Red Cross, 7 Liversage Street, Derby, DE1 2LD

Tel: 01332 348165

Opening times : Mondays 10-12.30 & Fridays 10-12.30

They ask for a donation towards the hiring of the wheelchair. Size and availability will depend on their stock levels at the time.

If you live in Cannock, you can hire a wheelchair through Wheelchairs-r-us and they can be contacted on:
