The neonatal intensive care unit looks after premature and sick newborn babies, providing care in a purpose built specialist medical unit which opened in the Autumn of 2007. On average the unit looks after 360 babies per year.
The unit cares for premature babies from 26 week gestation as well as term babies with respiratory problems, congenital abnormalities, birth asphyxia, infections and other conditions which require special care. Babies who require surgery will be tranferred to Nottingham.
Neonatal Family Care Co-ordinators provide advice and support to parents before and after discharge.
