Winners: April - May 2015

Between April and May 688 nominations were made, all of which received a personalised certificate from our chief executive, Sue James.

In early July  the overall winners were invited to the Pride of Derby awards presentation, to be congratulated for
'going the extra mile'  for their patients and colleagues.

Sarah Booker Pride of Derby
Best Frontline member of staff

Winner: Sarah Booker, Sister, Ward 6, London Road Community Hospital

The judges chose Sarah because they felt she had really connected with a distressed dementia patient, by bringing her in a doll from her own home to care for, to help her settle down mentally. The colleague nominating Sarah described how the patient had “looked at the dolly with delight” and how it had given her “a new purpose.”

“The difference in the patient was amazing,” she said, and “in this day and age it is easy for these lovely acts of kindness to be forgotten.”

The judges considered how valuable this was from the patient’s perspective, as well as feeling that relatives would very much appreciate this thoughtful, compassionate care.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Team
Best Team

Winner: Cardiac Rehabilitation Team

The judges chose the Cardiac Rehab team because they could see from the patient’s nomination that they had gone out of their way to reassure the patient about the rehab sessions they had been offered, which led to them joining in, increasing their confidence and going on to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The patient said: “If someone hadn’t taken the time on that first session I wouldn’t have gone back – I didn’t realise just how the operation had affected my confidence and emotions. All the staff are welcoming, helpful, concerned and well informed. Thank you to all the staff, not forgetting the two volunteers, and hopefully as I attend the live well classes I am on the way to a full recovery.”

The judges felt that the positivity of the organisation shone through, thanks to the Cardiac Rehab team.

Inspirational Leader

Winner: Carolyn Langrick, Matron, Maternity - to be presented in September

Carolyn was chosen as the winner because she had taken the time to get to know her staff as people, as well as simply what they could do in their roles. By supporting them she gets the best out of them, both personally and professionally.

One of the colleagues nominating Carolyn said: “She is always approachable, flexible and understanding. She has been the most supportive manager I have ever had.”
