Putting Patients First

Total Hip and Knee Replacement Enhanced Recovery Patient Education Class

This project aims to improve patient experience, rehabilitation and recovery after surgery across many specialties, by engaging the patient’s own desire to rehabilitate. Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement pre-surgery patient education classes are key in achieving a one to two-day reduction in length of stay. Nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists deliver this vital component of the Orthopaedic Enhanced Recovery Pathways.

Iron Transfusions versus Blood Transfusions: Improving the Emergency Pathway for Symptomatic Anaemia

There is a national recommendation not to transfuse blood for iron deficiency without haemodynamic instability; however blood transfusions have become a routine medical response. IV iron replenishes the patient’s iron stores, compared to blood transfusion, which does not. When the underlying cause of blood loss is treated and IV iron is provided, no further treatment is usually required, in contrast to the use of blood transfusions. There are many clinical benefits for using IV iron and important lifestyle and cost benefits for patients.

Investing our Resources Wisely

NELA Liaison Team

The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) liaison team was developed to provide additional support to older people with frailty who need emergency abdominal surgery. Surgical teams, critical care and the liaison team worked together and length of stay was reduced, with significant cost savings to the Trust. This could be replicated in other surgical wards at the Royal Derby Hospital and in other trusts around the country.

Developing our People

Simulated Ward Round

Newly qualified doctors are expected to be fully competent in prescribing, decision making and prioritising on day one of their FY1 role. The simulated ward round provides a safe environment to learn from errors and develop ways to prevent them from happening when working as an FY1 doctor. This will have an immeasurable impact towards their future careers.

Ensuring Value from Partnership

Sharing Information across healthcare organisational & professional boundaries

The NHS has an increasing focus on partnership and collaborative working. GP integration, using the electronic whiteboard (Extramed), was developed to provide a solution for delivering high quality care across the whole patient pathway, enabling more seamless cross-boundary clinical working within healthcare’s complex social and organisational environment. The system is bringing the Community and Trust together as one big team, working for the good of the patient and their experience, while in our care.
