Patient Safety Awards 2011

Patient Safety Awards 2011 - Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's 'Rapid Response Alert Card' won the Communicating Patient Safety category at the Health Service Journal and Nursing Times Patient Safety Awards 2011.

The card was designed by Derby Hospitals staff in partnership with the East Midlands Cancer Network and with patient and carer involvement.

A great deal of innovative work is being undertaken across the NHS to improve patient safety and empowers staff to make this a priority. The Patient Safety Awards aim to recognise the best examples of this work, and to share it across the healthcare community so it can be adapted for use elsewhere.

HSJ Awards – Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust received a Judge’s Commendation in the Acute Healthcare Organisation of the Year category.

The Health Service journal (HSJ) awards recognise the innovation, best practice and inspiration that are found throughout the healthcare profession today.

 

Healthcare 100 Employer 2010

Healthcare 100 - Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was named third best acute teaching trust in the country to work for in the Healthcare 100 awards.

The Healthcare 100 list identifies the top healthcare providers to work for in the UK. The influential list, researched by Ipsos MORI on behalf of the Health Service Journal and Nursing Times, and supported by NHS Employers and the Department of Health is based on the results of an exclusive poll of the employees of participating organisations.

Health and Social Care Awards - Derby Hospitals’ Young People’s Diabetes Team and Ward Nutrition Assistants projects were shortlisted in the acute care category for the East Midlands round of the national awards. The Ward Nutrition Assistants (devised by senior matron Marie Mignott) went on to win the regional award.

Now in their 9th year, these flagship Awards are endorsed by the Department of Health and is the largest peer-to-peer scheme of its kind. The scheme is run at regional and national level giving teams well-deserved recognition both in their own patch as well as nationally.

UNICEF’s UK Baby Friendly accreditation - The maternity unit at the Royal Derby Hospital is the first in the country to be awarded the accolade continually since 1998 and is now the UK’s longest standing Baby Friendly Hospital. The Baby Friendly initiative is part of a global campaign run by UNICEF to promote best practice in hospitals to help improve breastfeeding rates.

 

British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) – The echo department in the clinical measurement department has been formally accredited for training and transthoracic echocardiography at an advanced level by the BSE. The accreditation recognises the standard and quality of the department and the work it does. It is now one of only three hospital departments in the country to be given advanced accreditation.

 

Society and College of Radiographers (SoR) – Imaging staff from Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust won the Midlands round of the SoR UK Team of the Year award.   There are 314 staff members within the imaging team and their nomination was based around how they coped with the move from the former DRI, now London Road Community Hospital, to the Royal Derby Hospital.

The Society of Radiographers represents more than 90 per cent of the diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers in the UK. It is responsible for their professional, educational, public and workplace interests.

 

NHS Leadership Awards – Consultant Mike Henley was shortlisted in the Innovator of the Year category in the national NHS Leadership Awards 2010 for developing an innovative approach to the diagnosis and treatment of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTs).  

Working with East Midlands NHS Innovations Hub and the Trust’s Research & Innovation Department, Mike Henley has formed a company, iQudos, in partnership with Derby Hospitals, which provides a nurse-led service for management of benign prostate disease.

The NHS Leadership Awards aim to recognise great leadership at all levels in the NHS and partner organisations, sharing good practice and encouraging leaders of the future.

Patient Experience Network (PEN) national awards – The Ward Nutrition Assistants/Marie Mignott won the Personalisation of Care category at the inaugural Patient Experience Network national awards.

The PEN national awards are for healthcare organisations working to improve patient experience and the winners were announced at the headquarters of the Royal College of Nursing.

Johnson’s Baby Mums’ Midwife of the Year - Derby Hospitals’ community midwife, Margaret Hirst, was the North of England regional winner of the Johnson’s Baby Mums’ Midwife of the Year Award for putting her mums first and providing excellent care.  

Margaret Hirst was nominated for the award by mum Gemma Richardson, from Heanor. She said Margaret supported her when she lost her daughter at 37 weeks and then throughout her next pregnancy with her son.

 

Patient Safety Awards – Two Derby Hospitals projects were shortlisted in the Health Service Journal and Nursing Times Patient Safety Awards 2011. Clostridium difficile: Tradition Vs Technology is shortlisted in the Infection Control and Hygiene category and the Rapid Response Alert Cards were shortlisted in the Communicating Patient Safety category.
