In 2008-09 Derby Hospitals was rated ‘excellent’ for quality of service and use of resources – the highest possible score in the Care Quality Commission's Annual Health Check. Derby Hospitals was the only hospital in the East Midlands to receive the double excellent rating putting us in the top 10% of hospitals in the country.

In 2009-10 we maintained this high standard of performance and this was recognised in the Care Quality Commission’s benchmarking report published in October 2010.

Derby Hospitals is the first hospital in the East Midlands to pass an independent inspection of patient care standards at its highest level by the NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA)

In 2010 Derby Hospitals was selected by the East Midlands Stroke and Cardiac Network to provide the best possible treatment for stroke and heart attacks which are now available to all patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Care for stroke patients at the Royal Derby Hospital has been rated in the top 25% of hospitals in the country (one of only two hospitals in the East Midlands) in the biannual National Sentinel Stroke Audit. This means that stroke patients are seen and treated by specialists much quicker, maximising their chances of a full recovery

Patients at Derby Hospitals treated for a broken hip in 2010 received the quickest treatment in the East Midlands. This means patients have better outcomes with prompt surgery followed by rehabilitation leading to early recovery and a shorter hospital stay.

Ward Nutrition Assistants from the Royal Derby Hospital won the Acute Care category of this year’s East Midlands Health and Social Care Awards. Our Young People’s Diabetes Team were also a regional finalist.

The maternity unit at the Royal Derby Hospital is the first in the country to be awarded UNICEF’s Baby Friendly accreditation continually since 1998. Derby Hospitals is now the UK’s longest standing Baby Friendly Hospital.
