How we help

Patient Welfare - a helping hand along the way

From purchasing large items of specialist medical equipment to buying new toys for the Children's Hospital, Derby Hospitals Charity has been able to make a real difference to the care that patients receive when they are in hospital.

Thanks to donations to Derby Hospitals Charity the Trust now has a well stocked patient library including many large print books which help patients who love to read to pass away their time on the wards.  By funding several projects to enhance the environment in areas such as the new Children's emergency department, the Nightingale Macmillan Unit and the Neonatal intensive care unit, we have been doing what we can to ensure that carers and relatives feel more relaxed in their surroundings when they are going through a traumatic time during the illness of a loved one.

Research

Derby Hospitals Charity helps fund  various research projects every year, helping to find new ways of treating illness and curing disease.

Our support for research projects ranges from small amounts for the purchase of laboratory equipment and consumables, to salaries for research staff working on specific projects. Work is ongoing on various research projects in areas such as:

  • Rheumatology and rehabilitation

  • Cancer services

  • Children's pharmacy

  • Renal services

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Palliative care

Staff Training

Each year Derby Hospitals Charity provides funding for staff to attend a variety of courses and conferences at home and abroad. By doing this we are ensuring that our staff are kept as up to date as possible with the latest medical knowledge to benefit the patients they treat.

We also fund subscriptions to medical journals and text books so that our staff have the most up-to-date reference literature available to them.

Dr Anne Turnbull, consultant radiologist, said: "We find that attendance at courses stimulates on-going learning for our staff. It is always commented on by others that is clear to see why our Breast Unit is so good and how proud the staff are to be representing Derby."
